On the 25th of March, I had the chance to catch Harold Pinter’s play “Homecoming” life in Kuala Lumpur Performing and Arts Center. It was the first time I watched a theater life on stage. Indeed it was an enlightening and learning experience for me. I was amazed at the way our local actors managed to portray what Pinter wrote in his play. It was like watching the original but of course with some Malaysian flavour in it. The script was maintained as close as possible to the script written by Pinter. Throughout the 120minutes in the theater, I had learnt a few things concerning performing a play. First of all, it would be through the usage of lighting to show which character is speaking and also to show the passing of time. In the performance, the director used moving shadow of lights to show the passing of night to morning. This gives audience the visual cue that the imagined time in the play is changing which I think is vital to prevent audience from feeling lost. Besides that, another thing that interests me is the usage of sound effects to show the different situations in the play. In this play by Pinter, the sound effects played a vital role because there are situations in the play when it is tensed and changes almost immediately to calmness. So, the sound sort of serves as guidance to me while watching the performance. I will certainly bear in mind the importance of these two elements when my group and I perform for next semester theater subject. In short, watching Homecoming certainly changed my perception on performing a play. What I used to think as boring now seems to be fun and exciting to me.
